As we approach the close of another transformative year, we’re filled with gratitude for your unwavering partnership. Your dedication to advancing healthcare through data drives the vital work being done every day to improve the lives of individuals and communities across Michigan. Together, we’ve made remarkable strides in delivering timely, secure, and impactful health information exchange—building a more connected, patient-centered system of care.
This year, our efforts have been guided by MiHIN’s strategic plan, which focuses on strengthening partnerships with the State of Michigan, supporting public, behavioral, and population health priorities, and advancing the Michigan Health IT Roadmap. These guiding principles have shaped our work, ensuring we meet the health data needs of our ecosystem while laying a strong foundation for years to come.
A key milestone this year has been our progress in migrating to the new Integrated Technology Platform—a critical effort we’re on track to complete in 2025. Thank you for your patience, collaboration, and valuable feedback throughout this complex process. Transitioning to a more advanced platform is no small task, but your support has been instrumental in making it a reality.
Beyond the migration, our collective mission to modernize health data exchange and champion the establishment of a Health Data Utility (HDU) in Michigan has remained front and center. Together, we’ve expanded data-sharing partnerships, integrated social determinants of health, and delivered cutting-edge solutions like real-time alerts and analytics. These achievements are a testament to what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration. Your input has directly shaped these advancements and continues to guide our path forward.
Thank you for being an essential part of this journey and for your commitment to delivering better health outcomes for the communities we serve. We look forward to building on this year’s successes and achieving even more together in the coming year.
This Month's Highlights
Every year, MiHIN closes for business between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. The MiHIN office will be closed December 24th, 2024 through January 1st, 2025. During this time, there are small teams monitoring the Help Desk ticketing system, phone lines, and interfaces. Amaintenance production code and feature freeze will occur 12/17/24 through 1/3/25. During this time, MiHIN will not implement requests for changes or enhancements to our production environments.
An operational freeze will occur 12/19/24 through 1/1/25. During this time, no new users or organizations can be introduced to, trained, or added to existing use cases, services, and/or tools.
ACRS files submitted through DSM or the legacy SFTP will not be validated and/or loaded. If you submit ACRS files via this method please make sure to submit your valid ACRS files before Thursday, 12/19/24 for loading.
ACRS files submitted through the automated SFTP will continue to be validated and processed automatically.
The MIGateway File Submission module will remain operable for ACRS file submission.
If you are unsure which method your organization currently uses to submit ACRS files, please reach out the MiHIN Help Desk for assistance.
MiHIN is piloting a project to improve real-time data exchange between EMS and hospitals, addressing challenges caused by data silos. EMS providers, like Reading Emergency Unit (REU), can access critical patient data, such as allergies and medications, through MiHIN’s portal. In turn, EMS units share real-time patient records, including vital signs, with Hillsdale Hospital, helping ED teams prepare before arrival.
Phase two will share hospital discharge reports with EMS to improve training, diagnosis accuracy, and billing processes. MiHIN aims to expand statewide after proving the project enhances emergency care coordination and patient outcomes.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy (ASTP), released the Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability: Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCATM) (HTI-2) final rule.
ASTP has finalized certain TEFCA-related proposals from the HTI-2 proposed rule to advance interoperability and support the access, exchange, and use of electronic health information.
A new release has been deployed with key feature improvements and critical bug fixes, including:
A referral summary file preview that enables users to quickly access and review referral summaries directly within the platform, eliminating the need for downloads and allowing for seamless copy-and-paste functionality.
New activity indicators highlight referrals with recent updates to be easily identified and ensure clarity on their status.
The MiHIN Referrals lnbox default sorting is now set to Last Updated, ensuring referrals with the most recent updates appear at the top.
Additionally, critical bug fixes addressed issues such asslow typing in chat, incomplete or “missing” referrals due to attachment file size limits, and chat messages appearing in the wrong referral.
From Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and public health to the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement™ (TEFCA™), the discussions offered valuable insights into where we are and where we’re headed in the journey toward true interoperability.
